John Barry

Independent Investment Committee Member (Infrastructure)

John has worked in infrastructure investment since 2005 following 15 years in private equity principal investment and advisory. He graduated in Physics in 1989 and worked for E&Y before joining 3i Group in 1996. After 9 years in 3i’s private equity business he was a founding member of 3i Infrastructure which listed in 2007. He moved to First Reserve in 2009 where he joint founded their infrastructure business, raising their first 2 funds, and was a member of the IC. John has pursued a plural career since 2018 and is a board member on a number of the UK’s leading infrastructure businesses.

What most attracted you to joining the MML team?

I have known Bal and Ian since the 1990s when we worked together at 3i. The three of us operated in the same team for some years and worked jointly on a number of successful transactions. I have immense respect for them both and they have created an incredible franchise at MML. Andrew and I have built a great relationship over the past two years as he has developed the infrastructure franchise and I was fortunate to be a sounding board to Andrew, Bal and Ian as they prepared the business for launch. Their investment strategy is a great one and blends both infrastructure and private equity skillsets into a compelling investment proposition. It was an easy decision to accept the investment committee role where I can bring my years of experience and insight to support the team and the business.

What does life look like when you leave the office?

When I’m not juggling my various roles I do my best to look after a couple of rescue dogs and three daughters, as well as my wife – perhaps not in that order!
