Having worked with a wide variety of Private Equity & Infra Managers in the past, I was excited to join a firm that was a real specialist, and where there was an entrepreneurial approach to deal-making. The team has a genuinely differentiated strategy that encourages thinking outside the box to partner with founders to help drive value through alignment and growth, which is not only refreshing, but leads to better outcomes for all stakeholders. I'm acutely aware that we are the stewards of capital for institutions that are making a real difference to people's lives, be it pension funds, charitable foundations or endowments, so being part of a team that has such a strong track-record in the lower mid-market, where, in my view, you can consistently find the best risk-adjusted returns was appealing. Finally, given this is fundamentally a People business, understanding the culture at the firm was an important aspect for me. From this perspective it was helpful having known a number of the MML team for well over a decade, as they underlined both the collaborative and meritocratic atmosphere at the firm, telling me everyone works hard but has a lot of fun along the way!
With parents who worked in Economic Development a lot of my childhood was spent in far-flung corners of Africa and Asia so there were lots of good adventure stories. I've also always been a bit of an adrenaline junkie, enjoying outdoor pursuits such as sky-diving, ski-racing, spear-fishing and foil-surfing, but I have to say the biggest rollercoaster ride has been bringing up three kids (under the oversight of my wonderful wife) who never cease to amaze me with their boundless energy, questions and already far superior knowledge of all things Tech.
